Here we go again

Got a strange one, tech2 is not showing any errors or fault codes as far as I can gather, last week the garage replaced the rear main oil seal in my sons Jack, got it back ran sweet for 3 days, then yesterday driving along she cut out stopped dead, but fired straight back up drove 2 k's then stopped again, anyway I got it back to my house, removed and cleaned the ROPCV, put back together and she fired up idled sweet, then put a few revs and it ran rough then cut out, started back up and let it idle for about 10 minutes seemed ok, put revs on her and it died again, so fired back up left it idling and decided to remove the fuel return line whilst running and there is absolutely no diesel coming out of the fuel return line, so my question is could this be my problems? I do have a spare engine with the fuel return solenoid, but I thought I would ask the question here first, because I know its going to be a to remove

Silverstone Tyres - not bad at all

I've spent many months researching new tyres for my Jackaroo and finally, I bought and fitted a set of Silverstone AT-117 Special all terrains.

When I bought my vehicle, it was fitted with 16" factory alloys on which the previous owner put Goodyear Wrangler A/T's in a 265x75Rx16 size. The car had a 2 inch lift and with the Goodyears, the car had impressive ground clearance. However, I found that the larger tyres also caused the car to be overgeared and it suffered in performance and economy.

I decided to go down to a 15" size rim and tyre just for the hell of it. I sourced the rims and tyres through ebay. The rims were bought from a private seller and the tyres from a 4x4 dealer. The total cost of the rims, tyres, delivery and fitting was $990.00. The tyre size I chose was 31x10.5x15. By downsizing, I've noticed a slight improvement in performance and I've only lost about 25mm in ground clearance but I've still got plenty of that in reserve.

I was really undecided and sceptical about the Silverstone tyres and was ready to get BFG's but the dealer convinced me to go with the brand. I've only travelled a couple of hundred km's on the Silverstones and I must say that so far I'm impressed with them. They are almost identical to the BFG's in design, quality and performance but are almost half the price of the BFG's. The only thing I noticed immediately was that they were a bit soft on the bitumen when turning corners but I fixed that with an adjustment to the tyre pressure. Road noise is zero and ride comfort outstanding.

I then took the tyres on to some dirt and once again they performed really well. The tread pattern can unfortunately trap small stones but they're eventually ejected with a bit of forward motion. The ROH rims are a Lancruiser offset and stick out about 15mm - 20mm past the body which means there is the potential for stones to be flicked backwards on to following traffic or on to my vehicle's body work. Flexy flares will be my next modification to fix the stone flicking problem.

I can recommend the Silverstones as a viable alternative to the premium brands especially for those on a tight budget. They're not for everyone so you'll have to do your own research but for me, they do the job nicely. Shop around because there are quite a few dealers selling the Silverstones but you should be able to get a set of five AT-117's for around $800.00. You can check the tyres out and my Jackaroo at http://forum.australia4wd.com/index.php?&a...tem&CID=111

Silverstone is a privately owned brand and the tyres and are made in Malaysia, not China.

Roof Racks for the Jack (fitting)

Hi guys and gals, I'm hoping someone out there can sort this out for me. I'm wanting to get racks and a basket for a roof top tent and get it all done before the summer hits and I came across the Rola CRM02-3 which is what I wanted. So I got up on a ladder and started to peel back the weather strip as per the installation doco says and these racks are designed for the OEM anchor points as thats what I want, don't really feel like drilling holes in my roof. The strip is off and I expected to find 3 anchor points with nuts front/center and rear to fix these bars. Wat tha, theres nothing here, just periodic gaps in the strip of metal going the full length of the roof where the plastic clips fit. Is this what I was supposed to see, nothing or is there something there I can't see... I'm really confused now. Can anyone please help me out.

BTW its a 2001 LWB Jackaroo

I've added a pic of the rear with out the weather strip

Oil Rail Pressure Control Valve further dismantling.

This follows on from Oil Rail Pressure Sensor Valve Rebuilding for 4JX1 engine. which shows the dismantling up to the point at which I have started.

I had an old ORPCV laying around and have been unable to fully dismanle it without destroying it. However I found it laying in a bucket of water "rusted -up" so I figured I had nothing to loose. The following pictures show that the main valve is in the end (trumpet) section and works by opening and closing the 4 unevenly spaced holes. The rest of the valve appears to be the control section that opens and closes the valve itself through the electric solenoid. Even though mine was corroded there was considerable metal fragments inside making the valve stick and causing the need for its replacment.

At first I tried grinding from the nipple end but after a while changed tact and cut in from the side with a cut-off saw until I could see what was inside.

The end cap which usually has a nipple on the end and a microscopic hole does not appear to be threaded and is simply pushed in. I believe this part of the valve should be able to be dismantled normally by using a pin punch down the bell end and tapping gently.

The bore or the valve body is straight with a step (out at the threaded end) for a circlip on the valve body to seat against which means that everything comes out the threaded end.

Perhaps someone else could varify that the valve can be dimantled in this way and fully serviced and cleaned.

4jx1 head

I'm in the process of replacing the head on the Jack, and I noticed a small indent between the inlet and exhaust valve, but not between all the valves. I'm curious, so I looked at the old head and it's the same (couldn't see it for the soot) Does anyone know what it's for or it's purpose?

G'day all! just dropped the sump tonight to help in removing the engine without removing trans and found the long oil pickup pipe broken, just another thing to be fixed!

Just wondering what I should be checking for damage due to this being broken and what others have done to fix?

Thanks in advance.

Transmission Switch

I am hoping someone can help me or head me in the right direction on this.

I have a 1999 Jackaroo turbo diesel, 4JX1 engine and manual transmission. I am trying to source a 1st and 2nd switch that is fitted to the gearbox, right hand side front switch (p/n 8-97165-080-0). It feeds info into the EMC (pins J1-32).

I have tried Holden dealers and Head Office....."as the vehicle is 10 years old, we no longer stock this item". I have tried unsuccessfully with after-market switches and vehicle wreckers from Perth to Victoria with no luck. My next try will be Isuzu over seas.

The switch was damaged during a clutch replacement and now puts on the "check engine" light. Tech 2 fault code is "P1589 Transmission Switch". I would like to know what this switch does and perhaps I can run with it disconnected (check engine light out) permanently. I have been running with the defective switch and it doesn't seem to affect the performance of my vehicle in anyway??

Hope someone can shed some light on my dilemma,

Thanks.

Hi all.

As you may have seen a few posts from me lately, i have joined the Jack club (not the drink)

I am actually moving from Geelong to Hervey bay in April and towing my 22ft boat there too.

Im trying to prep the 4by for the trip and also just some maintenance as im not sure what the previous owner has done.

I want to:

Identify the auto trans to purchase a filter for it,

Flush it completely out ???? how?

Replace filter and fluid (how much and what type)

Also do i flush the transfer cases or just drain oil and put in new (what oil should i use)

My issue is that when idle the 4wd selector and gear shift shake like crazy and want to stop it, not sure whats causing it.

Thanks for all your help thus far, only a few more bits to do :)
