Coolant Leak, where's this from

$

Hi fellow members.

I walked out this morning and saw a huge green puddle under my car, after removing the bash plate I was greeted with the below pictures.

A couple months back I had a mild leak that was coming from the water pump and was advised to go to holden and purchase a coolant kit which comprised of 3 tablets ( made out of walnut shells apparently) and crush them up and put it into the radiator. I was told it was going to be like sand blasting the internals and clean it up. My question how long do I leave it in there before flushing and was told that it could stay in till my next service which isn't quite due yet but now I found this.

Can anyone tell me or at best guess where this coolant is leaking from and what needs to be done and roughly how much I'm looking at for repair.

Will that bars stuff repair the leak temporarily till it goes for the service.

Any advice would be great..

Thanks peoples

Jack

Rear End Noise

Hi all. There is a distinct noise that is coming from the backend of my Jack. It happens mainly when I am turning left or when I'm off road. It is a loud metal on metal sound squeal which I thought initially was a wheel baring but it can't be or it would make it all the time. Anyone had this problem and do they know the fix. I know it's a hard one to describe on the computer but I've had the wheels off, checked the brakes etc and all seems to be fine. Any help would be much appreciated

Cheers

Tech 2 Died - Now Fixed

$

Hi all

While using my Tech2 on my Jackaroo, for a simple test, with the engine running, it turned off after about a minute. I checked the DC plug and turned it back on, which it did, then the screen gave a flicker, then died altogether.
No response to key presses and no lights at all.

I'm dissappointed with myself as I always use an external battery. It was just going to be a quick test. I got lazy and just plugged it in, relying on the power fed from the ECM plug.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I'm a bit annoyed that this has happened. It's an expensive lesson which shouldn't have happened.

I can put this failure of the Tech2 down to just coincidence, or down to the likelyhood of my vehicle having a higher charging voltage than normal.
It has an aftermarket alternator and voltage sits around 14.5v with some pulsating.
I haven't had this car for too long and other more pressing matters with the usual 4JX1 ailments needed more priority. It was never a problem that I would have ignored.

It is quite possible that the first and only time I did not use an external battery to power the Tech2 allowed this slightly elevated voltage to damage the unit.
If this is true then the Tech2 is not guarded against this, so be warned!!

An interesting thing I picked up, and unfortunately too late, is that the fuses used in the Tech2 lead with the battery clamps, are rated at 40Amps, refer picture.

That is a gross mistake by the manufacturer considering the fuse holder clearly states 3Amps maximum. I'd taken this for granted.
So if you own a Tech 2, remove these 40A fuses and replace it with the correct value, if they are
available. If not available, modify the loom and use a different fuse holder that will accommodate a 3A fuse, whatever kind.

I opened the unit, and the only physical damage to the eye , was a small burned track which was now open circuit.
Repairing this track did not fix the unit. Without a circuit diagram, this will be a very time consuming repair, something I do not have or am willing to invest in for the moment.

For now, the only thing it is good for is for "Show and Tell", so here are some pictures.

4JX1 Messy Oil Changes + Template

$

For those doing their own oil changes, the 4JX1 gives you 2 great opportunities to make quite a mess.
Even if you leave the motor resting overnight, and allow the oil to drain to the sump, there is no escaping of oil dripping everywhere
when the oil filters are removed.

As the main filter is removed, oil spills over the front differential and along the filter, and unless cleaned up somehow, will leave
oil on the driveway or wherever it is parked.

The smaller filter too likes to dribble oil everywhere. there is not a lot you can do to avoid this. The filter is mounted upside down,
and gravity happily assists in spilling whatever oil is in the filter on removal.Unfortunately I have not thought of a solution for this one.

Here is a description of a gadget that somewhat will assist you in minimising this mess when changing the main oil filter.
Simply cut and shape a short piece of 90mm stormwater pipe to something that ressembles the attached picture.

The idea is to use your oil filter removal tool first to losen the filter. Do this until you can turn the filter by hand to a point just
before the seal breaks away and starts to spill oil. Squeeze the funnel (for a better word), past the torsion bar and over the filter
as far as it will go. Place a catch tray below the funnel. You can now losen the filter until the oil starts to run out. Wait a little bit until the oil flow is greatly reduced, then with a bit of a fiddling manouvre, keep turning the filter (funnel still in place) until you can remove the filter. Expect some more oil to flow as the filter is removed.
With a bit of practice, maybe only a few drops will be spilled, a vast improvement.
The gadget stayed in place (by friction) and can be left there unattended while oil is draining.

Hint. If you have access to a grinder with a steel brush, simply outline with a texta what you want removed from the PVC pipe, then just buff it into shape. Failing that, use a drill and rotary burring file.

2002 Jackaroo Diesel Turbo engine problem?

Looking at a cheap 2002. Engine on start up sways around like its loose and sounds rough, no diesel in coolant and exhaust is clean but rich, not really sooty though. It settles down in a minute and to drive it's like on 3 cyl and then cleans out. Has 260,000 km. Could it be stuffed turbo, blocked up mani fold from EGR, TPS. I'm handy with the tools and buy it or should I keep looking?

Leaking power steering

Hi guys,

The power steering box in my Jackaroo has developed a leak. It doesn't leak much, just enough to leave a deposit on the garage floor when parked overnight. Takes ages to make any significant difference to the level in the PS reservoir.

Went to a power steering place and they said that to fix it would require a complete rebuild or an exchange unit (or  one from a wrecker). Cost $700~$1500 and maybe a month's wait. Another fix was to use 'power steering stop leak'. Never thought that I would hear a shop recommend 'stop leak' for anything. Was advised that it might take a while for the 'stop leak' to work, i.e. a few days to a few months.

Anyway have started to use the 'stop leak' but haven't noticed any reduction in the leaking. Has anyone else had success with these products? Did the shop guy BS me about needing a complete rebuild?

2001 3.5 petrol O2 sensor second hand or new

Hi my jackaroo engine light keeps coming on and the last time the mechanic checked it had logged a previous issues with the O2 sensor. I he cleared the fault as it was no longer active but after a while it came back. I I notice the employer's are is running very rich stinks of un burnt fuel and blows black smoke I am going to have the mechanic check the fault again tomorrow. If it is the sensor is it worth buying a second hand one over a new one? If new where is the best place to source one?

Thanks Mike

Rear wheel bearing failed again!

$

Hi guys,

When servicing the Jack the other day I noticed that some oil had leaked out of the top of the rear diff. I have experienced this problem before and it's usually due to a blocked breather which causes the air pressure inside the diff to build up as the diff heats up. Since I'd just finished a 6000km caravanning trip to Lake Eyre I would image that the rear diff got hot a number of times.

Anyway, after procrastinating for a few days I decided to remove the diff centre and redo the seal and naturally make sure that the breather was nice and clear. In the process of removing the rear axles (which is necessary to remove the diff centre) I noticed that the LHS wheel bearing was sloppy and rough while the RHS bearing was OK. Now the wheel bearings on this model are sealed (do not run in diff oil) and I noticed that some of the grease had leaked out of the seal. This normally happens if diff oil manages to leak past the axle seal which can happen if the breather is blocked. Didn't see any signs of diff oil on the bearing though so I don't know if this was the cause this time.

What's p*****g me off is that this will be the third bearing I've had to replace on this side. The problem with these bearings is that they're not exactly cheap and they need a heavy duty press to get them off and I don't have the necessary tools in my workshop.

My question is, has anyone else had to replace the rear bearings in their Jack a number of times. BTW, the front wheel bearing in my MY2000 Jack are still original and the truck's just ticked over 350,000km.

2001 jack driveline shudder

$

Hi guys

My jackaroo has an annoying driveline shudder while driving. It happens during cruising, at the moment when you apply or release throttle.

The mechanic has had a look and regreased the main drive shaft, but it hasn't resolved the issue. For info I replaced the factory viscous clutch with a heavy duty a couple of years ago, but I cannot recall if the shudder appeared after it went in.

I'm not sure whether this is a common problem for the jackaroos, so hopefully someone might be able to shed some light on this?

Thanks

Darius

Erratic dash voltmeter

$

Hi guys,

Another thing that's been bugging me for ages is that the voltmeter in my Jack randomly drops from ~13V to 11V, 10V or even 8V. It will stay there for a random length of time (from seconds to half an hour) and then suddenly jump back to ~13V. Obviously the battery voltage can't change this quickly and I've never had a flat battery so I assume that the alternator is OK. In fact, I've checked the battery voltage a number of times when the dash voltmeter displays 8V with the battery showing ~13.6V at engine idle.

Has anyone else had the problem? Do I need a new dash voltmeter?

had a spare 10 minutes so I decided to pull the spinner apart to have a look and see how much it had collected,

photo #1 shows how the carbon builds up and sticks like a molasses to the inside of the spinner.

photo #2  I wiped through the grime with one finger the photo doesn't show it very well, but it was about .25 mm thick.

photo #3 all clean up ready for reassemble

I would be grateful if anyone can tell me a source, or even a part number, for the roof trim clip in the attached photo.

There are 8 either side and although the roof trim isn't exactly vital it's in good shape apart from half the clips being broken.

The vehicle is a 1999 model.

You know your 4JX1 is running well when you have time to worry about the body trim...!!!

Fuel temp error??

Ive just got the jack back from having a good 2nd hand engine fitted, it is running sweet, but I have a check engine light warning, Tech2 is telling me Fuel temp sensor circuit high input, I havent had a look as of yet as its getting too dark, but I assume this sensor is located on the fuel return at the back of the cylinder head? it may also be possible that they have forgotten to plug the harness back into it
